According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) National Laborforce Survey 2021, Only 19 percent of the youth use the internet. Of these 97% use Internet for social networking, 32% for academic work, and 10% for searching for jobs online.
The Uganda Youth IGF will be happening on 23rd August 2023 under the theme, “The Internet We Want – Empowering Young people in Uganda”, and will convene youth in Uganda to deliberate on this topic.
In order to achieve the internet we want, we need to ask ourselves what we want the internet for. Posing this question establishes a cause for meaningful connectivity. Young people want information that can help them shape their lives and the internet is a good resource for them.
The 2023 Youth Internet Governance Forum will be taking place at the National ICT Innovation Hub and will be graced by speakers like Lillian Nalwoga ( Africa IGF MAG Chair), Innocent Adriko (Uganda Youth IGF Coordinator), Nathan Jesse Kalenge ( Uganda Youth IGF Co-Coordinator) and Gilbert Beyamba (Director Programs, Pollicy), who will be the keynote speaker for the day.
This dynamic event will have session speakers, lightning talks, Workshops, and capacity-building sessions. Some of the topics for discussion are “ Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies and How Youth can benefit from it”. This session will have speakers from Academia, Douglas Onencan ( ISBAT University), and Vangamoi Emmanuel (Uganda Christian University)
The topic of encryption will have speakers like Mutegeki Cliff Agaba ( Internet Society Uganda Chapter, Theorose Elikplim Dzineku, and Dorcus Kagoya ( Uganda Christian University)
Among the lightning talks speaker are Ndagire Joanita Joshirah (John Paul II Justice & Peace Center) and Sumaiya Nalukwago (Google Women Tech makers.
Capacity building session will be graced by Allan Magezi (ICANN 73 Fellow), Lillian Kamara(ICANN 75 Fellow), Lucky Jimmy Boroa (UGNOG), and Jesse Nathan Kalenge (ISOC IGF Youth Ambassador 2022) while the Cybersecurity workshop will be facilitated by Jerome Okot from Milima Security.
