WOUGNET in partnership with the Association for Progressive Technologies (APC) organised a workshop to discuss gender inclusive and best practices governing online spaces in Uganda, especially women’s rights in Uganda. The workshop is under Our Voices Our Future Project under WOUGNET. The event was held at Mestil Hotel and Residences located in Nsambya and it took place from 8 am to 12 pm.
The Executive Director, Sandra Aceng gave opening remarks which later ushered us into the discussion where we made some deliberations having the following guiding questions.
What challenges would you consider gender inclusion in the online space?
What are some of the challenges women face and what are the solutions?
What are the best practices that govern online spaces to ensure the safety of women and girls?
After that, we headed into the keynote presentation by Rose Wakikona, who delved into the topic of online gender-based violence online. She pointed out how we have an over-regulated space which makes freedom of expression limiting.
In addition, she noted that ⅓ of women report experiencing SGBV online but besides that, they face other challenges like Cyberstalking, Sexual harassment.
